사랑방선물 - Love room gift ??

A new korean supermarket has just opened around the corner from my work. While browsing its aisles to day I came across this candy. I had to buy it because if you literally translate 사랑방선물 it says "Love room gift". Which in english is pretty funny for a packet of candy balls.
I assume however it doesn't actually mean that, but I can find any other meaning for it. Any koreans out there who can give me a hand??

  • That's a pretty hard question actually. Need to have a bit of background historical knowledge to get the meaning... 사랑방 is a kind of room that existed in most houses in the past, but does not exist anymore nowadays. It is a kind of room for guests visiting your house for a short stay or wait. When they come and see you, they are normally led to this room, chat together, and wait for the host to see. Whiling waiting or staying they are served with foods, drinks, nibbles and other things with which they can kill the time and they can get fed. Maybe current versions would be Nintendo, WII, or wireless labtop with James Boags.:) I think 사랑방선물 contains this kind of semantics. Might be my interpretation is biased and wrong, but hoping this helps.

    Your friend Jai.
