Another step towards wireless video kiosks

I noticed this article this morning.

One potential use of the wireless transceiver chip has owners of handheld media devices being able to step up to a shopping centre kiosk and download high-definition files of movies and TV shows in the blink of an eye.

Seems like it won't be too long before this become a reality. I've talked about this idea before here and here.

It will be a happy day when I can go to the local train station and get a hot coffee in a can and a HD-Movie Bundle from the vending machine.

괴물

괴물 (R:Goehmul) "Monster" is the lastest korean movie I have watched. It was a huge success at the korean box office and unlike nearly every other korean movie in this genre was a raging success in korea.

The thing I really love about korean ( and for that matter japanese horror ) is that they are not afraid to kill off main characters and that even includes the children, and even when finally the "evil things" are dead, it still seems like everything sucks for the "good guys"..

I thought the special effects in this movie were not as good as I would expect from a blockbuster, in some scene I thought I was looking at a Dr Who special effect. But having said that it is still a good watch. I give it 3 kimchis out of 5.

꽃 피는 봄이 오면

Last night I watched “SpringTime” actually I think this a crappy translation, it should be “When the flower blooming spring comes”. The movie came out in 2004.

The movie overview is:

To trumpeter Hyeon-Woo, life seems to remain forever locked in winter. In
desperation, Hyeon-Woo signs up for a position teaching a children's wind
ensemble at a small junior high school in a distant Dogye village. Worn-out
instruments, tarnished trophies and frayed certificates testify to the poor
conditions of this ragtag group. This leads Hyeon-Woo, together with his
students, to take on a seemingly impossible challenge

SPRINGTIME is the revitalizing, moving tale of a trumpeter whose wounded soul gains a newfound hope after he starts teaching a wind ensemble in a children's school in a mountainous coalmining village. Beginning in the rains of autumn and continuing
to the first breezes of spring, this movie illustrates how a heart is gradually
healed as a part of the ongoing changes of life - as part of life, love and the
turning seasons.

The movie was a good mix of humour and sadness, with a lot of dry humour and also some heart felt moments, and once again proving that a great story makes up for lack of special effects everytime. It stars 최민식 who is probably one of the most famous Korean actors known outside of Korea, and 장신영 who in my opinion is one of the hottest Korean actresses.

I give it 4 kimchis out of 5. Oh and “Kenny J” even gets a mention.

말아톤 – Latest Korean Movie

In keeping with my news year resolution, last week I watched 말아톤 (E:)Marathon. It is a story an Autistic boy/man and his mothers’ wish for him to run a Marathon.

말아톤 is a movie about disability, and about the lack of tolerance society has for
people who are different. Based on the true story of an autistic boy who
completed the Chuncheon Marathon four years ago, the film's protagonist is
20-year old Cho-won (played by Jo Seung-woo), who was diagnosed with autism at
the age of five. His mother, played by Kim Mi-Sook, is a major character in the
film, vividly illustrating the hardships experienced by families living with
autistic people.

The movie was brilliant and I recommended it to everyone , even if you cannot speak a word of korean, it is well worth it. Jo Seung-woo is brilliant and the dream sequences and conversations he has about zebras are wonderful and inspiring.

I give it 4 kimchis out of 5.

First Movie of the Year

So far, so good with New Years resolution no 2. This week I watched week I watched 집으로. A very nice movie I give it 3.5 kimchi’s out of 5, and showed me I have a long way to go with my conversational korean.

I did however find a frame that beautifully displayed the animal noise standards problem I ranted about earlier last year. Take a look at this frame.



The subtitled reads “(cow crying noise) eermmae”. That’s “eermmae” not “moooo”. Oh and cows cry not talk in korea.
